This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, three countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while five others recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, and Japan. The total deaths in these five countries as of Saturday, May 6, 2023, amounted to 346, with a weekly growth rate above -19.02 percent.
Saudi Arabia recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 100 percent. Worldometer recorded four deaths in the country, an increase compared to the previous week's reported two deaths.
Next is Hong Kong, which recorded 77.78 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. Daily data shows that deaths in the country increased by 17.07% compared to the previous day. Meanwhile, deaths in Indonesia increased by 65.91%, deaths in Israel decreased by 15.79%, and deaths in Japan totaled 132 (down 19.02%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Indonesia with 146 deaths. Death reports in the country increased by 65.91% compared to the previous week. Following Indonesia, India recorded 134 deaths (down 20.24%), Japan recorded 132 deaths (down 19.02%), Hong Kong recorded 48 deaths (up 77.78%), and South Korea recorded 47 deaths (down 25.4%).
Total deaths in Asia over the past seven days were recorded at 532. This accounts for 27.45 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 1,938. The number of deaths in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 538 deaths.
