The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 4.64 million cases by Saturday, July 23, 2022. The Dominican Republic recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 64.03 percent. GISAID recorded 228 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 28.09 percent compared to the previous day.
Venezuela follows with a weekly Omicron case growth of 51.61 percent. Daily Omicron cases in the country increased by 51.61 percent compared to the previous day, totaling 62 cases.
Furthermore, Mayotte reported 197 additional Omicron cases (a 24.68% increase), French Guiana saw a 23.5 percent increase to 494 cases compared to the previous week, and Pakistan reported an 18.99 percent increase to 1,059 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases stands at 15,446, a decrease of 3.76 percent compared to the previous day. Since its initial detection, Omicron cases in Indonesia have steadily increased.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is advised to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
