The Indonesian Ministry of Health has conducted whole genome sequencing on 5,815 coronavirus (COVID-19) sequences in Indonesia up to September 7, 2021. Of this number, 2,347 sequences, or 40.4%, are variants of concern (VoC).
The most dominant variant is Delta (B.1.617.2), with 2,347 sequences. This variant, originating from India, is most prevalent in Jakarta, with 777 sequences.
Furthermore, 322 Delta variant sequences were found in West Java. The Delta variant was detected in East Kalimantan and Central Java with 299 and 191 sequences respectively. West Sulawesi is the only province without recorded Delta variant cases.
Besides Delta, 64 Alpha (B.1.1.7) variant sequences were detected in Indonesia. This variant, originating from the UK, has spread across 11 provinces. The majority, 37 sequences, are located in Jakarta.
There are also 17 Beta (B.1.351) variant sequences in the country. This variant, originating from South Africa, was found in Jakarta (12 sequences), West Java (2 sequences), East Java (2 sequences), and Bali (1 sequence).
These three new coronavirus variants have higher transmission rates. Therefore, the public needs to be cautious about the transmission of these three coronavirus variants.
To prevent the spread of coronavirus, the public is urged to diligently implement the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands with soap. In addition, the public is encouraged to avoid crowds and reduce mobility.
