COVID-19 statistics in Europe this week still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. This week, 21 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while 12 others recorded fewer deaths.
Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Latvia, Lithuania, Austria, Slovenia, and Bulgaria. The total deaths in these five countries for the week ending December 18, 2022, amounted to 105, with a weekly growth exceeding 66.67 percent.
Latvia recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Europe, with weekly growth reaching 116.67 percent. Worldometer recorded 13 deaths in the country, an increase from the six reported the previous week.
Lithuania followed, recording deaths 100 percent higher than the previous week. Daily data shows a 9.09% increase in deaths compared to the previous day. Austria saw a 79.17% increase in deaths, Slovenia a 70% increase, and Bulgaria a 66.67% increase.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, Germany recorded the highest number of deaths in the past seven days in Europe, with 918 deaths—a 19.53% increase compared to the previous week. France reported 686 deaths (a 42.92% increase), Italy 519 deaths (a 9.26% increase), the UK 392 deaths (a 16.67% increase), and Russia 389 deaths (a 1.3% increase).
Total deaths in Europe over the past seven days reached 3,728. This accounts for 36.19 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 10,301. The number of deaths in Europe increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,277.
