The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) reported that Indonesia's waste generation in 2020 reached 67.8 million tons. The government targeted a 22% reduction in waste, but only achieved 14.17%.
However, looking at historical data since 2015, the national waste reduction achievement has steadily increased. From 2015-2018, waste reduction ranged from 1.7% to 2.7%, while in 2019 it jumped to 13.27% and increased again to 14.17% in 2020.
Based on Presidential Regulation (Perpres) 97 of 2017, the Indonesian government has set a national target of a 30% reduction in waste and 70% waste management by 2025, as well as a 70% reduction in marine plastic waste by 2025.
Nationally, waste management performance in 2020 remained relatively poor. KLHK recorded an index score of 49.44 points in 2020, categorized as "poor." The target was 61 points ("moderate").
Broken down by region, no districts/cities had a waste management performance index categorized as "very good" (0%). Only 8 districts/cities (9%) had a "good" waste management performance.
35 districts/cities (10%) had a "moderate" waste management performance index. 105 districts/cities (23%) were categorized as "poor," and 363 districts/cities (58%) were categorized as "very poor."
