This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to the continued increase in the number of deaths. This week, 22 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while 16 other countries recorded deaths, but in smaller numbers.
Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Yemen, Maldives, Japan, Oman, and Kazakhstan. The total deaths in these five countries as of Saturday, January 22, 2022, amounted to 117, with a weekly growth exceeding 193.33 percent.
Yemen recorded the highest increase in deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 300 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded eight deaths, an increase compared to the previous week's reported two deaths.
Following Yemen is the Maldives, with weekly death growth reaching 300 percent. However, the daily death toll in this country decreased by 20% compared to the previous day, which recorded five deaths.
Next is Japan with 55 deaths (up 243.75%), Oman with a 200% increase in deaths, and Kazakhstan with a 193.33% increase.
Looking at the number of death reports, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in India, with 3,131 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 35.13% compared to the previous week. Following India is Turkey with 1,155 deaths (up 9.27%), Vietnam with 1,102 deaths (down 24.73%), the Philippines with 494 deaths (down 47.72%), and South Korea with 242 deaths (down 25.99%).
The total deaths in Asia over the last seven days were recorded at 7,762. This accounts for 14.4 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 53,894. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 7,683 deaths.
