According to a Populix survey, Indonesian youth generally want the president elected in the 2024 General Election to address environmental issues.
The majority, or 82%, of young respondents considered air pollution the most pressing problem.
Other environmental issues that the president should address, according to young people, are waste management (78%), flood mitigation (64%), and forest destruction and fires (57%).
Other issues include marine pollution (57%), water pollution (51%), climate change (50%), clean water scarcity (42%), and land degradation (38%).
The Populix survey also recorded young people's suggestions for the government regarding environmental issues.
The most common suggestion was to restore forest function and create more green open spaces (51%).
Other suggestions included addressing pollution and transportation (36%), environmental monitoring and regulation (33%), environmental education and socialization (30%), and waste and waste management (15%).
This survey was conducted by Populix from August 31 to September 12, 2023, using quantitative and qualitative approaches.
The qualitative approach was conducted through online mini focus group discussions (FGDs) involving millennials and Generation Z aged 17 and older in both large and small cities.
