Lastly, outdoor ozone pollution accounts for 5.9% of total deaths, with an estimated 470,000 deaths (uncertainty interval: 108,000 to 800,000 cases). Outdoor ozone pollution occurs when toxic gases or pollutants react with sunlight and heat, making it a powerful respiratory irritant.

As a note, the total percentage proportion may exceed 100% because a single death case can potentially be attributed to or caused by more than one type of pollutant.

The research team also explained that the disease burden from air pollution is not distributed evenly across age groups.

"Throughout the world, children and older people are most severely affected," the State of Global Air report stated.

In 2023, nearly 5 million deaths (uncertainty interval: 3.8 million to 5.7 million cases) among people over the age of 70 were linked to air pollution.

The research team projects that the toll of air pollution is likely to increase in the coming years.

"This comes as populations age and much of the world continues to experience high levels of pollution," State of Global Air noted.
