School Nutrition Services Data in Central Java, South Sulawesi, and Papua for 2023-2024

In 2023-2024, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) conducted research related to the school nutrition environment assessment toolkit (NEAT-S) in Central Java, South Sulawesi, and Papua.

One of the domains assessed in the study was nutrition services in schools.

From the survey conducted, no schools in Central Java, South Sulawesi, and Papua exclusively provided iron-folic acid tablets (IFATs).

However, some schools provided IFATs along with deworming medication. The percentage of schools in Central Java was the highest in this indicator, at 48%.

The following are the details of school nutrition services according to UNICEF's research:

Central Java

• Schools providing iron-folic acid tablet supplementation: 0%
• Schools providing IFAT and deworming medication supplementation: 48%
• Schools providing deworming medication: 50.5%
• Number of schools providing growth and weight measurement services: 61.1%
• Of these, schools with a referral system for students with malnutrition problems: 63.6%

South Sulawesi

• Schools providing IFAT supplementation: 0%
• Schools providing IFAT and deworming medication supplementation: 8%
• Schools providing deworming medication: 92%
• Number of schools providing growth and weight measurement services: 94%
• Of these, schools with a referral system for students with malnutrition problems: 4.3%

Papua

• Schools providing IFAT supplementation: 0%
• Schools providing IFAT and deworming medication supplementation: 40%
• Schools providing deworming medication: 55%
• Number of schools providing growth and weight measurement services: 85%
• Of these, schools with a referral system for students with malnutrition problems: 41.2%

Data collection was carried out using UNICEF's NEAT-S methodology in 2023-2024, covering 268 schools: 198 in Central Java, 50 in South Sulawesi, and 20 in Papua.

School samples were selected non-randomly based on ease of access. According to UNICEF, because the sample was not randomized and the geographical coverage was limited, the study results cannot be generalized nationally.
