According to a report by Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS), 13.9 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia throughout 2024.
The majority of these foreign tourists were millennials (aged 28-43), comprising 32.27% of total visits.
Foreign tourists belonging to Generation X (aged 44-59) accounted for 24.96%, while baby boomers and pre-boomers (aged 60 and above) made up 18.86%.
Conversely, the proportion of foreign tourists from younger age groups was smaller, with Generation Z (aged 12-27) at 16.92% and post-Generation Z (aged 11 and under) at only 6.99%.
BPS noted that the significant number of older tourists presents opportunities for developing tourism focused on comfort and health.
Regarding their region of origin, the highest proportion of millennial foreign tourists came from Africa at 41.67%.
Millennial foreign tourists from the Middle East comprised 39.67%, followed by America at 32.66%, and Europe at 31.50%.
The distribution of foreign tourist visits from Oceania was dominated by older age groups, with Generation X accounting for 25.66%, and baby boomers and pre-boomers also at 25.66%.
"This reflects that Indonesia is more popular among older foreign tourists from Oceania," wrote BPS in its report titled *Statistics of Foreign Tourist Visits 2024*.
