The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.92 million cases by Wednesday, December 28, 2022. Ghana recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 21 percent. GISAID recorded 1,763 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region decreased by 0.06 percent compared to the previous day.
Next is China (PRC), which recorded a 16.55 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily Omicron cases in the country increased by 5.52 percent compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Spain increased by 7.01 percent to 87,903 cases compared to the previous week; Omicron cases in Brunei Darussalam increased by 6.32 percent to 4,036 cases compared to the previous week; and Thailand recorded 22,036 Omicron cases (a 5.04% increase).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 31,336, a decrease of 0.15 percent compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
