South Sumatra Most Polluted in Indonesia This Evening (Sunday, October 15, 2023)

Air quality in South Sumatra this afternoon is the worst in Indonesia. According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK)'s Air Pollutant Standard Index (ISPU) page on Sunday (15/10/2023) at 4:00 PM WIB, the air quality index in South Sumatra was 261.

According to the KLHK's Directorate of Air Pollution Control, the ISPU is a unitless number used to describe the ambient air quality at a specific location, based on its impact on human health, aesthetics, and other living things.

The ISPU calculation is based on measurements of seven air pollutant parameters: PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO, O3, and HC. Air pollutant parameter measurements are spread across 72 stations in various regions.

Based on the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 14 of 2020 concerning the Air Pollutant Standard Index, an ISPU in the range of 0-50 indicates good air quality, 51-100 indicates moderate air quality, and 101-200 indicates unhealthy air quality that is detrimental to humans, animals, and plants.

Next, very unhealthy air quality in the range of 201-300 can increase health risks in sensitive groups. Meanwhile, hazardous air quality in the range of over 300 can seriously harm health and requires immediate action.

Below South Sumatra, Central Kalimantan ranks second worst in Indonesia with an air quality index of 148. Then, in third place is Jambi with an air quality index of 129.

This means that South Sumatra has very unhealthy air quality.
