South Sulawesi's Air Pollution Worst in Indonesia This Morning (April 21st)

Air quality in South Sulawesi this morning is the worst in Indonesia. According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK)'s Air Pollutant Standard Index (ISPU) page on Monday, April 21, 2025, at 8:00 AM WIB, the air quality index in South Sulawesi was 94.

According to the KLHK's Directorate of Air Pollution Control, the ISPU is a unitless number used to describe the ambient air quality at a specific location, based on its impact on human health, aesthetics, and other living things.

The ISPU calculation is based on measurements of seven air pollutant parameters: PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO, O3, and HC. Measurements of these air pollutants are taken at 72 stations across various regions.

Based on the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 14 of 2020 concerning the Air Pollutant Standard Index, an ISPU in the range of 0-50 indicates good air quality, 51-100 indicates moderate air quality, and 101-200 indicates unhealthy air quality that is detrimental to humans, animals, and plants.

Next, very unhealthy air quality in the range of 201-300 can increase health risks in sensitive groups. Meanwhile, hazardous air quality in the range of over 300 can seriously harm health and requires immediate action.

Below South Sulawesi, West Sumatra ranks second worst in Indonesia with an air quality index of 82. Then, in third place is DKI Jakarta with an air quality index of 77.

This means that no region has hazardous air quality.
