The National Police Headquarters' Food Task Force raided and sealed a rice mill in Karawang Regency in the early hours of Friday, July 22nd. PT Indo Beras Unggul, the rice processing company that owns the mill, is suspected of harming consumers by charging excessively high prices for ordinary rice, specifically IR64, a variety of rice subsidized by the government.
In addition to harming consumers by labeling the rice as premium, the rice mill also caused losses to the state due to the government subsidy on IR64 rice. Furthermore, the government has set a maximum retail price for subsidized rice at Rp 9,000 per kilogram.
For information, the government has to import rice every year because national rice production is insufficient to meet demand. Data from the Central Statistics Agency shows that in 2016, rice imports reached 1.28 million tons, valued at US$ 531.84 million, equivalent to Rp 7.1 trillion. Indonesia's largest rice imports came from Vietnam (558,000 tons) and Thailand (536,000 tons).
