Top 10 Indonesian Provinces with the Largest Youth Population in 2023: Eastern Indonesia Dominates

Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that there were 64.16 million young people, or 23.18% of Indonesia's total population, in 2023.

According to Law Number 40 of 2009, young people are Indonesian citizens aged 16-30 years. This means, according to BPS, those included in the youth category in 2023 were born between 1993 and 2007.

From a demographic perspective, the highest proportion of young people is in the eastern part of Indonesia.

Papua recorded the highest national percentage of young people, at 26.64% in 2023.

This is followed by West Papua and Riau Islands with youth proportions of 26.17% and 25.38% respectively in 2023.

Meanwhile, the province with the lowest number of young people is East Java, at only 21.09%. This is followed by Central Java with 21.95% and Bali with 22.13%.

The following is a complete list of the 10 provinces with the highest proportion of young people nationally in 2023:

1. Papua: 26.64%
2. West Papua: 26.17%
3. Riau Islands: 25.38%
4. North Maluku: 25.07%
5. Aceh: 24.96%
6. Maluku: 24.89%
7. North Sumatra: 24.84%
8. North Kalimantan: 24.67%
9. West Sulawesi: 24.46%
10. Southeast Sulawesi: 24.30%

In addition, BPS notes that the majority of young people in Indonesia are in the 19-25 age group, at 39.78%.

This is followed by the 25-30 age group at 39.05% and the 16-18 age group at 21.17%.
