Indonesia's Mobile Phone Subscribers Reach 341.3 Million in 2019

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) recorded 341.3 million mobile phone subscribers in Indonesia in 2019. This figure exceeds Indonesia's population of 270.6 million.

The majority, or 331.86 million mobile phone subscribers, purchased prepaid credit before use (prepaid). The remaining 9.41 million were postpaid subscribers.

The low number of postpaid subscribers is partly due to the difficulty in controlling and detecting usage, leading to inflated bills. Postpaid registration and payment procedures are also more complicated than prepaid. Furthermore, customers must pay even if they don't use any credit.

Nevertheless, the number of postpaid subscribers has increased annually. The average annual increase in postpaid mobile phone subscribers is recorded at 17.2%.

Meanwhile, the number of prepaid subscribers experienced a decrease of 117.03 million in 2018. The number increased again in 2019, although not as high as in 2017, which reached 438.29 million subscribers.
