Indonesia still has 1,130 kilometers of national roads in severely damaged condition. The majority of these national roads are located in North Sumatra, West Papua, and Papua. This assessment is based on the International Roughness Index (IRI), or an assessment of the smoothness of the road surface. The IRI is measured based on surveys using special equipment and vehicles.
Data from the Sub-Directorate of System Development and Performance Evaluation, Directorate of Bina Program, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, shows that the condition of roads with severely damaged surfaces reached 2.93 percent of the total length of national roads, which is 38,000 km. This condition is based on a survey conducted in the second semester of 2014.
Other results show that national roads in good condition totaled 23,913.60 km (62 percent), in fair condition 12,320.97 km (31.9 percent), and in slightly damaged condition 1,204.36 km (3.1 percent).
