The implementation of restrictions on social activities to curb the spread of Covid-19 severely limited public mobility. This condition significantly impacted the transportation sector, including air transportation.
The sharp decline in both domestic and international tourist visits resulted in negative growth for air transportation in 2021.
Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that the air transportation sub-sector experienced a further contraction of 8.01% throughout 2021. This contraction was the deepest compared to other transportation sub-sectors, as shown in the graph.
However, the 2021 contraction in air transportation was smaller than in 2020, which experienced negative growth of 53.06%.
The rail transportation sub-sector also experienced negative growth of 3.42% in 2021, but lower than the previous year's contraction of 13%.
The river, lake, and ferry transportation sub-sector contracted by 0.42% in 2021, but this was lower than the previous year's negative growth of 13%.
The warehousing and supporting transportation services (post and courier) sub-sector grew by 5.03% in 2021. This achievement was the highest compared to other sub-sectors and better than 2020, which experienced a contraction of 17.61%.
The land transportation sub-sector grew by 4.55% in 2021, better than the previous year's contraction of 5.34%.
Similarly, the sea transportation sub-sector grew by 2.89% in 2021, better than the previous year's contraction of 4.52%.
Overall, the transportation and warehousing sector grew by an average of 3.24% in 2021. This achievement was better than the previous year's contraction of 15.05%.
