In 2016, PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk (GGIA)'s fuel costs reached US$924.7 million, down 11.9 percent from the previous year. This amount represents 24.6 percent of the company's total operating expenses of US$3.76 billion. Meanwhile, the airline's largest expense was aircraft lease, reaching US$1 billion, an increase of 11.8 percent from the previous year. This accounted for 26.9 percent of the company's total operating expenses.
GGIA's revenue in 2016 reached US$3.86 billion, a slight increase of 1.3 percent from the previous year, while its profit plummeted 88 percent to US$9.4 million. The decline in non-scheduled flight revenue, coupled with increased aircraft lease and other costs, caused a sharp drop in company profits.
At the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders held on Wednesday (March 12th), Pahala N. Mansury was appointed as the President Director of Garuda Indonesia, replacing Arif Wibowo. One of the considerations of the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Rini Soemarno, in appointing Pahala was his experience as the former Chief Financial Officer of PT Bank Mandiri, with the expectation that he can improve the finances of the state-owned airline.
