Since 1956, the number of motor vehicles in Indonesia has been dominated by motorcycles. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik) recorded that the number of motorcycles in that year totaled 67,194 units, or approximately 37.1 percent of the total number of vehicles, which was 181,046 units. This was followed by passenger cars with 61,104 units (33.75 percent), then goods vehicles with 43,128 units (23.82 percent), and buses with 9,620 units (5.31 percent).
In 1949, however, the number of vehicles was still dominated by passenger cars, reaching 17,626 units or approximately 43.08 percent of the total number of vehicles. This was followed by goods vehicles with 15,949 units (38.98 percent), while the number of motorcycles was only 4,584 units (11.2 percent). The remainder, 2,756 units (6.74 percent), were buses.
However, by 2015, the number of motorcycles in Indonesia had increased dramatically to 98.88 million units, or approximately 81.45 percent of the total number of motor vehicles in the country, which reached 121.39 million units. The number of passenger cars reached 13.48 million units (11.11 percent), and buses totaled 2.4 million units (1.99 percent) of the total number of vehicles.
