An International Energy Agency (IEA) report shows that over 26 million electric vehicles were on global roads in 2022. This figure represents a 60% year-on-year (YoY) increase.
According to IEA data, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for over 70% of total annual growth in 2022, as in previous years.
"China accounted for over 50% of all electric vehicles on global roads, totaling 13.8 million units," the IEA stated in its *Global EV Outlook 2023* report.
This breaks down to 10.7 million BEVs and 3.1 million plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) in China.
The IEA noted that BEV sales in China increased by 60% in 2022 compared to 2021, reaching 4.4 million units, while PHEV sales nearly tripled to 1.5 million units.
According to the IEA, the strong growth of electric vehicles in China stems from the local government's support for sustainable policies on early adoption of these vehicles. This also includes extended incentives for purchasing electric vehicles.
After China, the highest number of electric vehicles was in Europe, with 7.8 million units in 2022. This includes 4.4 million BEVs and 3.4 million PHEVs.
The number of electric vehicles in the United States reached 3 million units last year, comprising 2.1 million BEVs and 900,000 PHEVs.
The number of electric vehicles on the roads in other countries reached 1.6 million units, with 1.1 million BEVs and 500,000 PHEVs.
