According to a Kompas Research and Development (Litbang Kompas) survey, 7 out of 10 respondents chose to travel home for Lebaran (Eid al-Fitr) using private vehicles, including their own cars, rented cars, or motorcycles.
Their main reason was that private vehicles were considered cheaper than public transportation. This was stated by 49.9% of respondents.
Furthermore, 28.8% of respondents considered traveling by private vehicle more comfortable than public transportation.
"This comfort can be interpreted as enjoying quality time in a private space, namely inside the private vehicles of those returning home," wrote the Litbang Kompas researcher in their report on Thursday (11/4/2024).
Then, 12.9% of respondents chose to travel home using private vehicles because they had more freedom to determine their travel plans and schedule, unlike public transportation which is bound by departure schedules.
In addition, 3.9% of respondents felt their journey was safer using a private vehicle, and 3.4% felt more free to stop at tourist attractions.
"The moment of the Lebaran homecoming trip is often used as an opportunity to stop and visit tourist attractions," said Litbang Kompas.
The report also mentions that the limited capacity of affordable public transportation was a factor considered by people when choosing their mode of transportation for the Lebaran homecoming.
This Litbang Kompas survey involved 839 respondents randomly selected using a stratified systematic sampling method in 38 Indonesian provinces.
Data was collected from March 25-29, 2024, through telephone interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 3.38% with a 95% confidence level, under simple random sampling conditions.
