The latest report from Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows that the number of train passengers in Indonesia reached 31.51 million in September 2023.
This figure represents a slight 0.6% month-on-month (mom) increase and a 23.27% year-on-year (yoy) increase.
By region, the number of train passengers in the Jabodetabek area still dominated, reaching 25.08 million in September 2023.
Meanwhile, the number of train passengers in the non-Jabodetabek areas of Java reached 5.98 million.
In total, the number of train passengers on the island of Java reached 31.06 million in September 2023.
Meanwhile, the number of train passengers on the island of Sumatra was only 451,000.
The number of domestic train passengers has generally continued to increase since 2022, compared to the beginning of the pandemic when the numbers plummeted sharply, as seen in the graph.
The number of train passengers in Indonesia reached its post-pandemic peak in July 2023, at 32.94 million. This figure even surpassed the pre-pandemic record of 32.28 million in February 2020.
Cumulatively, the number of train passengers from January to September 2023 reached 269.98 million, a 40.07% increase compared to the same period in 2022, which was 192.75 million.
