The COVID-19 pandemic hit the transportation industry in the capital city, including the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT).
Before the pandemic, this rail-based rapid transit system had a considerable number of passengers, reaching 24.41 million in 2019.
However, this number plummeted by 59.36% year-on-year (YoY) to 9.92 million passengers in 2020, and further decreased by 27.62% (YoY) to 7.18 million in 2021.
The decline in the number of MRT Jakarta passengers was due to the implementation of Community Activity Restriction (PPKM) policies amidst a surge in COVID-19 transmission.
At that time, many Jakarta residents worked from home, reducing the use of public transportation.
Although the number of MRT Jakarta passengers decreased from 2019 to 2021, the user satisfaction index for this public transportation service tended to increase.
In 2019, the user satisfaction index for MRT Jakarta reached 82.78%, then rose to 86.64% in 2020, and further grew to 88.29% in 2021.
This is in line with data showing that MRT Jakarta has excellent punctuality. In 2021, its on-time arrival performance was 99.94%, on-time stop performance was 99.97%, and on-time travel performance was 99.96%.
