Capgemini Research Institute states that software transformation in automotive manufacturers impacts every function.
Manufacturers incorporating software into their brand identity are said to have transformed vehicles into dynamic and constantly evolving platforms.
"In our survey, 6 out of 10 automotive companies stated that their software-based strategy will affect all or most of their brands within the next 5 years," Capgemini wrote in The Software-driven Mobility Era: Beyond Vehicles.
The following details the estimated percentage of brands that will be impacted by the Software-driven Mobility (SDM) strategy in the next 5 years:
- Strategy impacting most brands (>50%): 46%
- Strategy impacting few brands (<50%): 36%
- Strategy impacting all brands or only 1 brand: 15%
- Strategy not impacting brands: 2%
For information, Capgemini explains that SDM encompasses all software related to vehicle and mobility products and services. However, it does not include other types of software systems, such as manufacturing and supply chain, finance, or marketing.
Regarding software transformation in car manufacturers, Capgemini cites the example of Ford, which has developed a new cost-effective electric vehicle (EV) platform with a centralized digital operating system (OS).
This development is said to have taken place over the past two years to support sedan, SUV, and pickup truck models.
According to Capgemini, this aligns with 81% of global automotive companies who believe that software-based products and services will become as important as physical vehicles.
Capgemini's survey was conducted in June 2025 and involved 85 automotive companies from North America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific region as respondents. The survey was supplemented by 18 interviews with industry experts.
