According to data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF), Southeast Asian car sales reached 2.02 million units from January to August 2024.
This figure represents a 7.7% decrease year-on-year (YoY) compared to the same period last year, when sales totaled 2.19 million units.
It should be noted that the AAF only compiled this data from seven Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Up to August 2024, Indonesia was the largest car market in ASEAN, with sales of 560,619 units. However, its sales decreased by 17.1% (YoY).
Malaysia ranked second, recording car sales of 533,301 units, a 5.9% YoY increase. Thailand completed the top three with sales of 399,255 units, a significant drop of 23.9% (YoY).
Meanwhile, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, and Myanmar recorded car sales of less than 350,000 units during this period, as shown in the graph.
The AAF also reported that car production in Southeast Asia from January to August 2024 totaled 2.5 million units, down 12% (YoY).
Thailand was the largest car producer in the region, with approximately 1 million units produced from January to August 2024. Indonesia followed with 779,235 units and Malaysia with 536,313 units.
