According to data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF), Southeast Asian car sales reached 1.76 million units from January to July 2024.
This figure represents a 7.7% decrease year-on-year (YoY) compared to the January-July period of the previous year, which saw sales of 1.90 million units.
The AAF compiled this data from seven Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Until July 2024, Indonesia was recorded as the largest car market in Southeast Asia, with sales volume reaching 484,236 units. However, this figure decreased by 17.5% (YoY).
Malaysia followed with car sales of 462,088 units, an increase of 7.2% (YoY). Thailand was next with sales of 354,065 units, a significant drop of 23.8% (YoY).
Meanwhile, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, and Myanmar each recorded car sales of less than 300,000 units during this period, as shown in the graph.
The AAF also reported that car production in Southeast Asia from January to July 2024 totaled 2.18 million units, down 12.2% compared to the same period the previous year (YoY).
Thailand was the largest car producer in the region, reaching 886,069 units from January to July 2024. Indonesia followed with 671,311 units produced, and Malaysia with 462,347 units.
