According to a survey by the Research and Development Agency (Balitbang) of the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub), in 2019, 34.5% of online motorcycle taxi drivers had an income of only around Rp1 million to Rp2 million per month.
Some online motorcycle taxi drivers were able to earn Rp4 million to Rp5 million per month, but their proportion was very small, as shown in the graph.
According to the Kemenhub Balitbang survey in 2022, 50.1% of respondent online motorcycle taxi drivers earned only Rp50,000 to Rp100,000 per day. Meanwhile, 44.1% of respondents spent Rp50,000 to Rp100,000 on daily operational costs.
The Head of Advocacy and Community Affairs of the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI), Djoko Setijowarno, emphasized that the daily income of online motorcycle taxi drivers is almost the same as their operational costs. This means that their earnings are only enough to pay for fuel and food and drinks while working.
"The average income of online motorcycle taxi drivers is below Rp3.5 million per month, with working hours of 8 to 12 hours a day and 30 working days a month without any holidays," said Djoko in his press release on Sunday (9/10/2022).
"This is inconsistent with the promises made by online transportation application providers in 2016, which reached Rp8 million per month. It's difficult to make the profession of an online motorcycle taxi driver a reliable source of livelihood," Djoko added.
The 2022 Kemenhub Balitbang survey also found that 52.08% of online motorcycle taxi drivers reported rarely receiving bonuses from application providers such as Gojek, Grab, and Maxim. Furthermore, 37.4% never received bonuses from application providers, and 75% rarely received tips from passengers.
The survey was conducted online from September 13-20, 2022, after the government raised the price of subsidized fuel, Pertalite and Solar.
The online motorcycle taxi drivers involved in this survey numbered 2,016 respondents, with domiciles spread across Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. 81% of them were male, and 40% were aged between 20 and 30 years old.
