A report from Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the number of train passengers in Indonesia reached 29,824 in December 2022. This figure almost reached the pre-pandemic level of 30,000 passengers per month in 2019.
The number of Indonesian train passengers increased by 10.77% month-on-month (mom) and rose by 71.13% year-on-year (yoy).
Specifically, the number of train passengers in Java in December 2022 reached 29,245, comprising 23,118 passengers in the Jabodetabek area and 6,127 outside Jabodetabek. On the other hand, the number of train passengers in Sumatra was 579.

A significant decrease in the number of train passengers was observed since March 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic first broke out in Indonesia. However, the spread of the coronavirus is now increasingly under control, so public activities are starting to recover, including in the public transportation sector.
