According to data from Canalys, a Singapore-based technology research firm, approximately 4.2 million electric vehicles (EVs) were sold globally in the first half of 2022. This sales figure represents a 63% increase compared to the first half of the previous year.
These sales figures include battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
In the first half of 2022, China was the largest buyer of electric vehicles, accounting for approximately 2.4 million units. This represents 57% of total global EV sales during that period.
"This (China) is the fastest-growing market," said Jason Low, a senior analyst at Canalys, in a press release on Thursday, August 11, 2022.
The next largest buyers of electric vehicles were from Europe and the United States, with details as shown in the graph.
European consumers accounted for 27% of total global sales, the United States for 10%, and other regions combined for approximately 6%.
Canalys research also found that BYD Automotive was the best-selling electric vehicle manufacturer in the first half of 2022, with a 15% market share of total global sales.
Following BYD were Tesla with a 14% market share, SAIC Motor with 9%, Volkswagen Group with 9%, and Geely with 6%. The remaining brands combined held a 47% market share.
According to Canalys research, demand for electric vehicles continued to grow throughout 2022, driven by the emergence of several new EV models and rising fuel prices.
"Rising fuel prices are further boosting demand, and government incentives are also encouraging consumers to buy electric vehicles," Canalys explained in its report.
Canalys also predicts that global economic uncertainty will affect new electric vehicle orders next year.
