The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia's import value reached US$17.96 billion in March 2024. This represents a 2.60% month-to-month (mtm) decrease compared to February 2024, which recorded US$18.44 billion.

"The month-to-month decline in import value is due to a decrease in non-oil and gas imports, with a decline of minus 4.48%," said the Acting Head of BPS, Amalia A. Widyasanti, in an online press conference on Tuesday (22/4/2024).

Non-oil and gas imports in March 2024 fell by 5.34% (mtm) to US$14.63 billion.

BPS explained that out of the 10 main categories of non-oil and gas imports, plastics and plastic goods experienced the steepest decline, falling 27.75% (mtm) to US$691.5 million. Imports of vehicles and parts decreased by 19.71% (mtm) to US$595.7 million, and electrical machinery/equipment fell by 11.08% (mtm) to US$2.27 billion.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's oil and gas imports in March 2024 reached US$3.32 billion, an increase of 11.64% (mtm) compared to the previous month.

The increase in oil and gas imports was influenced by a 16.82% increase in crude oil imports, valued at US$2.49 billion. However, refined oil imports decreased by 1.50% (mtm) to US$829.6 million.

Cumulatively, the import value for the January-March 2024 period reached US$54.89 billion, down 0.10% compared to January-March of the previous year (cumulative-to-cumulative/ctc).

BPS detailed that the decrease in the first quarter of 2024 was due to a 1.57% (ctc) reduction in non-oil and gas imports to US$45.89 billion, while oil and gas imports increased by 8.13% (ctc) to US$9 billion.
