India plans to halt sugar exports starting October 2023. Although India's sugar supply to Indonesia accounts for only 8.9% of total national imports, this halt will affect domestic sugar prices.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Food and Beverage Industry Association (Gapmmi), Adhi S. Lukman, stated that an increase in industrial sugar prices is likely to occur in early 2024.

"My prediction is that refined sugar prices will increase again next year, perhaps not as much as this year, maybe around Rp14,000 or more," said Adhi, as reported by Detik.com on Friday (September 15, 2023).

He added that the impact of India's export ban will not only affect the domestic market but will also extend to global sugar prices.

"Frankly, this will be difficult, especially regarding prices. While we're not too worried about availability, we can source from other countries—Thailand, Brazil, although it's already difficult from Australia. But if one country bans (sugar exports), it will affect prices," said Adhi.
