A large-scale war between Israel and Palestine erupted again in early October 2023.
This war began with an attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which bombarded Israeli territory with rockets on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Then, on Sunday, October 8, 2023, Israel declared war and launched counterattacks.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the intensity of Israeli attacks on Palestinian territories, particularly the Gaza Strip, has continued to increase, while attacks from the opposing side have decreased.
"Israeli air, sea, and ground bombardments have continued and intensified across the Gaza Strip for six consecutive days," OCHA stated in its report on Thursday, October 12, 2023.
"Palestinian armed groups in Gaza also continue to fire rockets into Israeli population centers, although with lower intensity than in previous days," it continued.
Amidst the escalation of Israeli attacks, OCHA noted that the number of displaced people in the Gaza Strip has continued to rise, reaching approximately 423,000 by Thursday, October 12, 2023.
Approximately 64% of the displaced are sheltering in United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) facilities, with the remainder scattered in various locations.
"It is estimated that more than 153,000 displaced persons, whose homes have been destroyed or damaged, or who have left their homes out of fear, are staying with relatives and neighbors, as well as in other public facilities," said OCHA.
They also reported that Gaza has experienced a complete power outage, putting health, water, and sanitation services on the brink of collapse.
The outage occurred after Israel stopped the supply of electricity and fuel to Gaza on October 8, 2023, which subsequently led to the depletion of fuel reserves for Gaza's power plants.
