In a survey by the Katadata Insight Center (KIC), 11.2% of respondents admitted to having spread hoaxes. Of this number, more than half felt they were merely forwarding circulating news without verifying its truth. This argument was supported by 68.4% of respondents.

Furthermore, 56.1% of respondents also claimed to be unaware that the news they spread was false. Other reasons for spreading hoaxes included not knowing the clear source of the news and simply doing it out of mischief. This was acknowledged by 13.9% and 9.1% of respondents, respectively. A mere 2.7% of respondents admitted to deliberately spreading false news to influence others.

KIC collaborated with the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) to conduct a digital literacy survey. This research involved a total of 1,670 respondents from 34 provinces across Indonesia.
