ASEAN Countries with the Fastest Fixed Broadband Internet Speeds at the End of 2023

According to the Speedtest Global Index report, the median download speed of global fixed broadband internet reached 90.93 Megabits per second (Mbps) in December 2023.

In the ASEAN group, Singapore had the fastest fixed broadband internet connection, reaching 270.62 Mbps during that period. Its median speed was almost three times faster than the global average.

Thailand ranked second with a median fixed broadband download speed of 221.32 Mbps, followed by Malaysia in third place at 111.70 Mbps.

Indonesia ranked ninth in ASEAN for fastest median download speed, at 27.87 Mbps. Its median speed is significantly below the global average.

In response to this situation, Budi Arie, Minister of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), plans to implement a policy prohibiting mobile operators from selling fixed broadband internet services with speeds below 100 Mbps.

“We want to improve internet speed penetration and equitable internet access; the regulations are currently being drafted,” Budi stated in a press release, as reported by Detik.com on Friday, February 2nd, 2024.

He also mentioned that the minimum 100 Mbps restriction for fixed broadband internet packages is planned for implementation this year. Currently, Kominfo is in discussions with all mobile operators and the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII).
