Many factors can contribute to gambling addiction, ranging from economic factors to psychological issues.
This is evident from a survey report by QuitGamble.com, a gambling addiction treatment service company.
During the period of June 2023-January 2024, QuitGamble.com surveyed 3,320 gambling addicts from various countries who used their services.
As many as 83% of these addicted respondents gambled online, and 73% had debt problems.
The survey also found that the majority of respondents gambled to win a lot of money and change their lives, or in other words, to get rich quickly (36%).
Others gambled for entertainment (18%), to forget their problems (18%), and to earn money to pay off debts (14%).
A smaller percentage gambled due to boredom (7%), loneliness (3%), to socialize (1%), and other reasons (3%).
"Most people say they gamble to win, but after a few minutes of conversation, they realize that they are not gambling to win," said Anders Bergman, founder of QuitGamble.com, on their website.
"This highlights the importance of helping gambling addicts understand why they gamble. This is the first step in helping them break free from gambling. It's impossible to stop a habit if you don't understand why you have that habit," he continued.
