Based on data from the Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker), 31,549 employees experienced layoffs (PHK) between January and July 2023.
During this period, the most layoffs occurred in West Java, with an estimated 12,498 affected, followed by Central Java with 6,223 and Banten with 5,863.
However, this data does not reflect the total number of layoff cases in Indonesia, as Kemnaker only records layoffs reported by companies from 27 provinces through the Manpower Service Information and Application System and/or the Industrial Relations Court.
Provinces that have not recorded or reported layoffs until July 2023 include West Sumatra, Bengkulu, East Nusa Tenggara, Central Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, and North Maluku.
In response to the high number of layoff cases in Indonesia, Kemnaker believes it is necessary to increase the number of counselors for beneficiaries of the Job Loss Guarantee (JKP) program.
Citing IDX Channel, the Director General of Manpower Placement and Employment Expansion (Binapenta and PPK) at Kemnaker, Suhartono, stated that the current number of counselors is insufficient compared to the number of laid-off workers.
"Therefore, we feel the need to increase the number of counselors to provide counseling services to JKP program beneficiaries, especially regarding access to job market information," Suhartono said in a statement, as reported by IDX Channel on Wednesday (August 30, 2023).
Suhartono also explained that one of the counselor's tasks is to facilitate job seekers in finding new employment through counseling services. Kemnaker has provided counseling training to 370 counselors across provincial/regency/city Manpower Offices.
