According to a Ministry of Health survey, in 2023, 23.4% of the adult population in Indonesia (aged >18 years) experienced obesity.
Obesity is an excessive accumulation of body fat that can lead to health problems.
When broken down by economic group, this condition is more prevalent among the wealthy than the poor.
In 2023, only 14.3% of adults from the lowest economic group experienced obesity.
Meanwhile, in the highest economic group, obesity reached 30.5%.
The prevalence of obesity increases proportionally with increasing economic class, as shown in the graph.
According to the Ministry of Health, obesity is linked to poor dietary habits, such as overeating, frequent and irregular eating patterns, and excessive consumption of sugary, fatty, or fried foods.
Obesity can also occur due to poor activity patterns, such as excessive sitting, lack of exercise, or due to genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, and psychological disorders.
Obesity increases the risk of various diseases such as sleep apnea, asthma, kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and others.
The Ministry of Health states that obesity can be addressed by adopting a balanced nutritional diet, engaging in at least 1 hour of physical activity per day regularly, and undergoing psychological therapy if needed.
