According to data from the Southeast Asia Freedom of Expression Network (SAFEnet), throughout 2025, there were 2,382 reports of online gender-based violence (KBGO) in Indonesia, a jump of around 25% compared to 2024.
The most reported types of KBGO were threats of spreading intimate content, followed by sexual extortion, and non-consensual intimate images (NCII).
Here are the details of the number of KBGO cases in Indonesia by type throughout 2025:
- Threats of spreading intimate content: 1,150 cases
- Online sexual extortion: 592 cases
- NCII: 280 cases
- Gender-based doxing: 78 cases
- Unauthorized distribution of fabricated intimate content: 66 cases
- Flaming: 54 cases
- Gender-based account impersonation: 46 cases
- Others: 116 cases
According to SAFEnet, throughout 2025, the most KBGO cases were experienced by women, with 1,531 cases, particularly in the 18-25 age group, which accounted for 1,372 cases.
"The most KBGO incidents occurred on WhatsApp with 1,456 cases, followed by Telegram (709 cases), Instagram (354 cases), X (197 cases), and TikTok (170 cases)," said SAFEnet in its report.
The most KBGO cases reported by SAFEnet were from West Java Province with 504 cases, followed by DKI Jakarta Province (292 cases), East Java (288 cases), and Central Java (287 cases).
"Outside Java Island, cases were also recorded in North Sumatra (65 cases), South Sulawesi (21 cases), and Papua (6 cases), which shows that KBGO is a national issue and requires attention across regions," said SAFEnet.
