Elon Musk's internet service provider, Starlink, entered Indonesia in May 2024. However, an OpenSignal report indicates that its speed has now decreased in the country.
"Network congestion caused Starlink's download speed to drop by almost two-thirds and upload speed by almost half within 12 months of its launch," OpenSignal wrote in its report on Wednesday (October 8, 2025).
Starlink's download speed reached 42 megabits per second (Mbps) in 2024, then decreased to 15.8 Mbps this year. Similarly, upload speed dropped from 10.5 Mbps to 5.4 Mbps in 2025.
OpenSignal believes this decline was triggered by a surge in demand, leading to network congestion.
At the beginning of its operations, Starlink temporarily halted new user registrations due to capacity limitations. When subscription registrations reopened in July 2025, prospective new users faced a significant price increase.
The subscription price surged to US$490-US$574, or approximately IDR 8 million to IDR 9.5 million (assuming an exchange rate of IDR 16,565 per US$), equivalent to almost three times the average monthly wage of workers in Indonesia.
"This means interested consumers must pay a high initial cost or wait until demand subsides," OpenSignal wrote.
Despite the decrease in speed, consistency quality improved from 24.2% in 2024 to 30.9% in 2025. This means that although internet speeds are slower, connection stability has improved.
"This reflects lower latency and infrastructure updates," OpenSignal wrote.
