The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has been rapidly expanding in recent years.

AI is now commonly used to support business activities and assist individuals in finding information and entertainment.

However, the use of AI also has environmental consequences.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the data center infrastructure supporting AI operations requires significant energy, which generally still comes from fossil fuels.

This is feared to increase greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to global warming.

"We need to ensure that AI has a positive impact on the planet before we implement this technology on a large scale," he continued.

UNEP's concerns are partly related to research by Alex de Fries, an academic from VU Amsterdam School of Business and Economics, Netherlands.

In his research report, *The growing energy footprint of artificial intelligence* (October 2023), Alex de Fries revealed that ChatGPT, a globally popular AI application, consumes more electricity than Google Search.

On average, ChatGPT is estimated to consume 2.9 watt-hours (Wh) of electricity to complete one user request.

Meanwhile, standard Google Search without AI averages only 0.3 Wh per request, almost 10 times lower than ChatGPT.

In response to these findings, Alex de Fries advocates for AI industry regulations that consider environmental aspects.

"Regulators could create policies to increase the transparency of the AI supply chain to foster a better understanding of the environmental impact of this evolving technology," said Alex de Fries in his report.
