According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), smartphone shipments in China reached 71.6 million units in Q1 2025. This represents a 3.3% year-on-year (YoY) growth.

"This growth was driven by the government's expanded subsidies for smartphone products in January 2025, as well as peak sales momentum during the Spring Festival holiday season," IDC wrote in its report on Thursday, April 17, 2025.

In the first quarter of this year, Xiaomi captured an 18.6% market share of the Chinese smartphone market with shipments of 13.3 million units, a 39.9% YoY increase.

"Xiaomi stands out for successfully reclaiming the top spot after nearly a decade, thanks to government subsidies that perfectly align with its price-sensitive customer base," said IDC Senior Research Manager Will Wong in a written statement.

Huawei's smartphone shipments followed, rising 10% YoY to 12.9 million units.

OPPO's smartphone shipments increased by 3.3% YoY to 11.2 million units, and Vivo's rose by 2.3% YoY to 10.3 million units.

Meanwhile, Apple's smartphone shipments plummeted 9% YoY to 9.8 million units in Q1 2025.

"Apple experienced a decline because its premium pricing structure prevented it from leveraging the available subsidies," said IDC Senior Research Analyst Arthur Guo in his report.

Combined smartphone shipments from other brands in China reached 14 million units, a 14% YoY correction.
