Top 10 Indonesian Provinces with the Most E-commerce Businesses in 2022: West Java Takes the Lead

Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in 2022 there were approximately 2.9 million e-commerce businesses spread across various regions of Indonesia. This number is estimated to have increased by 4.46% compared to 2021.

Geographically, the number of e-commerce businesses in Indonesia is concentrated on Java Island, with a proportion of 76.38%.

West Java was the province with the highest number of e-commerce businesses in 2022, with an estimated 642,672 businesses.

East Java was second with an estimated 571,958 e-commerce businesses, followed by Central Java with 541,072 similar businesses.

The province with the lowest number of e-commerce businesses was North Maluku, with 1,438 businesses, followed by Maluku and West Papua with 1,704 and 3,284 businesses respectively.

Here is a list of the 10 provinces with the most e-commerce businesses in Indonesia in 2022:

1. West Java: 642,672 businesses
2. East Java: 571,958 businesses
3. Central Java: 541,072 businesses
4. DKI Jakarta: 253,261 businesses
5. Yogyakarta Special Region: 173,977 businesses
6. Banten: 105,384 businesses
7. Bali: 86,156 businesses
8. North Sumatra: 74,672 businesses
9. Lampung: 58,792 businesses
10. South Sulawesi: 51,682 businesses

BPS also noted that, based on category, the majority of e-commerce businesses in Indonesia operate in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sector, with a proportion of 37.82%.

This is followed by e-commerce businesses in the accommodation and food and beverage sector (20.39%), the manufacturing industry (18.12%), and other services (6.84%).
