West Java Has the Highest Number of E-commerce Businesses in Indonesia

The emergence of e-commerce has made buying and selling products easier and created new economic opportunities amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), there were 2.36 million e-commerce businesses spread across the archipelago in 2020.

Of this number, 1.77 million businesses (75.15%) were located on Java Island. This is because Java Island is the center of the economy and has more adequate digital infrastructure.

West Java is the region with the highest number of e-commerce businesses in Indonesia. At least 473,283 businesses (20.05%) are located in this province. This is followed by East Java, which has 467,996 e-commerce businesses (19.82%).

Next, the number of e-commerce businesses in Central Java is recorded at 406,991 (17.23%). Meanwhile, e-commerce businesses in DKI Jakarta and Yogyakarta numbered 218,582 (9.25%) and 147,781 (6.26%) respectively.

Meanwhile, the province with the lowest number of e-commerce businesses is West Papua, with only 1,685 businesses (0.07%). The next lowest province is North Maluku with 1,817 businesses (0.08%).
