The 2023 Asian Games football tournament kicked off on September 19th and will conclude on October 7th, 2023. Most recently, the Indonesian U-24 national team suffered a 0-1 defeat against Taiwan in their second Group F match at the Zhejiang Normal University East Stadium in Jinhua, China on Thursday afternoon (September 21st, 2023).
This was the Red and White team's first loss in Group F. Previously, Indonesia had secured a 2-0 victory over Kyrgyzstan in their opening Group F match on Tuesday (September 19th, 2023).
Despite the loss, Indonesia still has a chance to advance to the round of 16 as a runner-up or one of the three best-performing third-placed teams. Next, the Garuda squad will face North Korea on Sunday (September 24th, 2023). Indra Sjafri's team must win to progress from the group stage.
According to sports websites Goal.com and Bola.net, the Indonesian national team has never won a gold medal in football at the Asian Games. Indonesia's best achievement at the Asian Games was a bronze medal in the 1958 edition.
Since its inception in 1951, only 10 countries have won the gold medal in men's football. These are South Korea, Iran, India, Taiwan, Myanmar, Iraq, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Japan, and North Korea.
South Korea is the most successful nation in Asian Games men's football, having won five gold medals. Their first gold medal was in 1970, followed by wins in 1978, 1986, 2014, and 2018.
Iran has four gold medals, winning as hosts in 1974 and subsequently in 1990, 1998, and 2002.
This 19th edition of the quadrennial Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23rd to October 8th, 2023. The 2022 Asian Games were postponed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
