The Supreme Court (MA) has reduced the sentence of Ferdy Sambo, the defendant convicted of the premeditated murder of Brigadier Nofriansyah Yoshua Hutabarat (Brigadier J), in a cassation hearing held on Wednesday (8/8/2023).

The Head of the MA's Legal and Public Relations Bureau, Sobandi, stated that the court's decision involved an adjustment to the sentence due to a change in the qualification of the offense committed.

"The cassation verdict rejects the appeals of both the Public Prosecutor and the Defendant, with a revision of the criminal qualification and the sentence imposed," said the judge in the verdict, as quoted by *Katadata*, Tuesday (8/8/2023).

Previously, Ferdy Sambo was sentenced to death by the South Jakarta District Court, a sentence upheld by the High Court.

However, in the cassation hearing by the MA, the panel of judges commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment.

Besides Sambo, the MA also reduced the sentences of three other defendants in the premeditated murder of Brigadier J: Putri Chandrawathi, Ricky Rizal, and Kuat Ma'ruf.

The MA reduced Putri Chandrawathi's sentence, from 20 years to 10 years imprisonment.

Sambo's former aide, Ricky Rizal, had his sentence reduced from 13 years to 8 years imprisonment.

Similarly, Kuat Ma'ruf, Sambo's household assistant, had his sentence reduced from 15 years to 10 years imprisonment.

This MA cassation decision was subsequently welcomed by Ferdy and Putri. Ferdy Sambo and Putri Candrawathi's lawyer, Arman Hanis, stated that they respect the Supreme Court's decision.
