Public trust in the Indonesian National Police (Polri) has fallen following the murder of Brigadier J by Inspector General Ferdi Sambo.
This finding comes from Indikator's national survey entitled "Public Perception of the Sambo Case: Between Law Enforcement and Citizens' Expectations," conducted from August 11-17, 2022.
"The Polri is facing a trial. One of its high-ranking officers, Inspector General Ferdi Sambo, who held a strategic position as Head of the Professional and Security Division (Propam), has become a suspect in the premeditated murder case. The victim and several perpetrators were all members of the Polri, serving as aides," according to Indikator's survey introduction.
Due to this case, public trust in the Police institution dropped to 54.4% in August 2022, compared to 71.6% in April, as shown in the graph.
Public trust in the Polri is the lowest compared to trust in other law enforcement agencies, such as the Attorney General's Office and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
In a hearing with Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), 97 police personnel were investigated, with 35 suspected of violating the professional code of ethics. Of these, 18 personnel have been placed in special placement.
Facing this case, President Joko Widodo instructed the National Police Chief to reveal the case without any cover-ups. This instruction seems to indicate that there were attempts to cover things up initially, hence the need for a firm instruction from the President.
Furthermore, the National Police Chief formed a special team to handle this case and publicly report the results of the investigation. This premeditated murder case involving a high-ranking Polri official has received widespread media coverage.
Various elements are under scrutiny, including the perpetrators and those involved, the motive, the scenario, the evidence, and others. The public is awaiting the outcome of this case and observing the Polri institution's work in this major case involving its personnel.
