Public Support for the Winning Party in the Legislative Elections is Decreasing

Some members of the public are concerned because support for the winning political parties in general elections has been steadily declining since the Reformasi era. LSI Denny JA's survey results show that support for the winning party in the 1999 legislative election, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan or PDIP), reached 33.7% of the vote. Since then, support for the winning party has continuously decreased, as shown in the graph below. PDIP won the 2014 legislative election but only managed to garner 18.9% of the vote.

Based on the survey results, 77.8% of respondents agreed that Indonesia would be more stable if it had a very strong political party, while only 18.6% disagreed. One reason given was that a strong president needs a strong party to support them.

In the 2019 legislative election, according to the same survey, PDIP had the highest potential to become the strongest party, with 37.4% of the vote. This party, symbolized by a bull's head with a white snout, is the only party to have won a legislative election with over 30% of the vote since the Reformasi era.
