Public Trustworthy Institutions: TNI at the Top, Political Parties at the Bottom

According to the Indonesian Political Indicator survey agency, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) is currently the most trusted state institution by the public.

In early 2024, the TNI garnered trust from 89% of respondents. This breaks down to 19% of respondents expressing strong trust and 70% expressing sufficient trust.

"The high level of trust in the TNI is partly due to the TNI maintaining distance from practical politics," said Indikator's Senior Researcher Burhanuddin Muhtadi in a press conference on Tuesday (23/1/2024).

"This also serves as a warning to the TNI not to get involved in practical politics, especially in the run-up to the election," he added.

Below the TNI, the President achieved an 86% trust rating, comprising 20% of respondents expressing strong trust and 66% expressing sufficient trust.

The Attorney General's Office ranked third with 76%, with 10% of respondents expressing strong trust and 66% expressing sufficient trust.

Public trust in other institutions ranged from 65-75%, while political parties (parpol) received the lowest level of trust, at only 64%.

The Indikator survey involved 1,200 respondents aged 17 or older, or who were married, proportionally distributed across all Indonesian provinces. The sample was selected using a multistage random sampling method.

An oversample was also conducted in 13 provinces: Aceh, North Sumatra, South Sumatra, Lampung, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Banten, Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, North Sulawesi, and South Sulawesi, resulting in a total sample of 4,560 respondents.

Data collection was conducted from December 30, 2023 to January 6, 2024, using face-to-face interviews by trained interviewers. The survey's margin of error is approximately 2% with a 95% confidence level.
