Simultaneous Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) are planned for November 2024.
This will result in a vacancy in the position of regional head in many areas. This is because the terms of office of 101 regional heads will end in 2022, comprising 7 governors, 18 mayors, and 76 regents.
Of these 101 regional heads, 49 will leave office in May 2022, including:
* Governor of Banten, Wahidin Halim
* Governor of Bangka Belitung, Erzaldi Rosman Djohan
* Governor of Gorontalo, Rusli Habibie
* Governor of West Sulawesi, Ali Baal Masdar Anwar
* Governor of West Papua, Dominggu Mandacan
There are also 170 regional heads whose terms of office will end in 2023, consisting of 17 governors, 38 mayors, and 115 regents.
In total, 271 regional heads will leave office during the 2022-2023 period, comprising 24 governors, 56 mayors, and 191 regents.
Regional heads whose terms expire before the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections will be replaced by acting governors. The regulation regarding this is stipulated in Article 201, point 9, of Law No. 10 of 2016, which reads:
"To fill the vacancies of the Governor and Deputy Governor, Regent and Deputy Regent, and Mayor and Deputy Mayor whose terms of office end in 2022 as referred to in paragraph (3) and whose terms of office end in 2023 as referred to in paragraph (5), acting Governors, acting Regents, and acting Mayors shall be appointed until the election of the Governor and Deputy Governor, Regent and Deputy Regent, and Mayor and Deputy Mayor through the national simultaneous election in 2024."
Acting governors will be proposed by the Minister of Home Affairs to the President, with the criteria being a high-ranking civil servant (ASN) or equivalent to echelon I.
Meanwhile, acting regents/mayors will be proposed by the Governor to the Minister of Home Affairs, with the criteria being a high-ranking civil servant (ASN) or equivalent to echelon II.
